Today’s beer is Sierra Nevada Stout!
Bottle Size: 12 fl ounces/355mL
Cost: $1.75
Alcohol (ABV): 5.8%
Background Information (via Sierra Nevada): Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, the Sierra Nevada Stout is satisfyingly rich. Caramel and Black malts give the Stout its deep, dark color and pronounced roasted flavor.
“Sierra Nevada Stout is admirable from nose to finish, with notes of malty sweetness to the palate but plenty of bitterness available to set up a stimulating counterpoint.”
– Christopher Finch, A Connoisseur’s Guide
to the World’s Best Beer
Now let’s get to the beer!
Style: American Stout
Appearance: Black with a two finger whitish head. Good head retention and lacing.
Scent/Smell: Chocolate scent first comes to mind, followed by coffee, roasted malts. There was an obvious scent of alcohol when you took a deep whiff.
Taste: There is a lot going on here. Chocolate combined with some coffee. The hops add a slightly resin like taste at the end, not too overpowering though.
Mouthfeel: Medium body. Somewhat watery and bit dry, almost metallic. Very little carbonation of course which is typical of a stout.
Drink with (food): Barbecued foods, chocolate desserts, and shellfish.
Grade: B
There is a lot going on with this beer which can be both a good and a bad thing. I am not a big chocolate person, and the stout isn’t my favorite styles of beer which is why this isn’t an A beer.
